Half-Gallon Blue, White & Brown Swirl Pitcher
Handmade by Steve Abee – Traditional Catawba Valley Potter
This half-gallon pitcher is crafted using a swirl technique created by blending cobalt and other natural oxides directly into the clay before throwing. The blue, white, and warm brown clays are hand-mixed and combined on the wheel, forming natural ribbons of color that run through the body of the piece itself. A clear glaze is applied to highlight the movement and depth of the oxide-rich clays.
The form features a balanced pulled handle, a smooth, easy-pour lip, and the sturdy feel expected of true working stoneware. The piece is then fired in Steve’s traditional ground-hog kiln, where wood ash and flame help develop the warm, subtle variations that make each pot distinctly its own.
Whether used for serving, holding flowers, or displayed as a statement piece, this pitcher is one-of-a-kind—its swirl pattern and kiln-fired character shaped entirely by the motion of the wheel and the path of the fire.
