Half-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Face Jug
Handmade by Steve Abee – Traditional Catawba Valley Potter
This half-gallon face jug is made in the enduring Catawba Valley style, rooted in the region’s 19th-century stoneware heritage. Hand-built and wheel-thrown, the jug features a bold, expressive face sculpted directly onto the clay while still soft—each detail shaped by hand, giving the figure its own personality and presence.
The piece is coated in a traditional alkaline glaze, a hallmark of Southern pottery. When fired in Steve’s ground-hog kiln, the glaze melts into a flowing, glassy finish that highlights the contours of the face and creates natural runs and tonal variations unique to wood-firing. Ash from the firing settles onto the jug, adding subtle texture and warm, earthy depth.
Sturdy and substantial at a half-gallon capacity, this jug stands as both a functional vessel and a sculptural statement. No two face jugs are ever alike—this piece carries its own character, shaped by hand, clay, glaze, and fire.
